Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga: Which Sahara Experience is Better For You?

Two very different dune experiences — here’s how to pick between them.

Almost every Morocco itinerary includes a night in the Sahara, but “the Sahara” in Morocco usually means one of two distinct dune fields, and they’re different enough in feel that the choice is worth making deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever one shows up first in a search.

Erg Chebbi: closer, taller, busier

Erg Chebbi sits near the town of Merzouga, roughly a full day’s drive from Marrakech or Fes. It has Morocco’s tallest dunes — some over 150 meters — and a striking, almost sculptural look at sunrise and sunset, which is why it’s the more photographed of the two. It’s also the more accessible option, with more camps to choose from and an easier drive to reach.

That’s a genuine advantage, not just a trade-off: Erg Chebbi delivers dramatic, reliable dune photography and a shorter drive, and still offers a real sense of desert quiet once you’re out past the main viewpoints and settled into camp for the night.

Erg Chigaga: farther, quieter, more remote

Erg Chigaga sits near M’Hamid, reached via a longer overland route through Zagora — typically an extra day of driving compared to Erg Chebbi, often via Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Gorge. What that extra distance buys is real remoteness: fewer camps in view, fewer other travelers, and a stronger sense of genuine desert isolation once you’re there. The dunes themselves are less uniformly tall than Chebbi’s but cover a wider, more varied landscape.

If your priority is convenience and the classic tall-dune photograph, and your itinerary is on the shorter side, Erg Chebbi is the more practical choice — and still delivers a genuine desert night, not a diluted one. If your priority is maximum remoteness and you have an extra day or two to spend getting there, Erg Chigaga is worth the additional travel time.

What Both Dunes have in common

Regardless of which dunes you choose, the core of a good desert night is the same: a camel trek in as the light softens, a camp for the night (with comfort levels ranging from simple to genuinely luxurious depending on what you book), a shared meal, and — if you’re lucky with a clear sky — a level of stargazing that’s hard to find anywhere with less light pollution. Neither location is a “lesser” version of a desert experience; they’re just different versions of remoteness.

The Short Version

Erg Chebbi: closer, taller dunes, easier to reach, still a genuine desert night. Erg Chigaga: farther, quieter, more remote, better if you have the extra day and maximum isolation matters more than convenience. Neither is objectively “better” — it depends on how much travel time you’re willing to trade for how much solitude.
